We all differ from each other like pomegranate seeds: We are both similar and distinct yet we are still like a whole pomegranate. It is the crust of faith that keeps us together, the faith that we have for each other. But, what if the crust cracks… What if we doubt everything and our trust in each other… What if we lose our sense of justice… What if we seek our own justice… Won’t the seeds scatter everywhere like a cracked pomegranate?
“The Pomegranate” tells the story of a woman; seeking her own justice. “The Pomegranate” questions the justice of four people with different beliefs in a house, in half a day and in their own realms of faith.

LOVE “JUST A COINCIDENCE”
Saturday May 12th, 7pm (EST)
– – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – –
Turkey. 2011. Dir.: Ömer Faruk Sorak. 118 min. Digital
With Belçim Bilgin, Mehmet Günsür, Ayda Aksel and Altan Erkekli
Original Turkish Version with English subtitles
– – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – –
“If existence is not a coincidence, may love be a coincidence?”
Year 1977, a September morning in Ankara… Yılmaz tries to rush his pregnant wife, Neriman, to the hospital and he crushes into Omer’s car. This accident causes Omer’s pregnant wife Inci, who was in the back seat, to have a preterm labour. The babies are born on the same day. They see each other for the first time…
This accident is the threshold of the coincidences that bring Özgür and Deniz together. They come across each other in Ankara several times during their childhood and youth. Each intersection has a butterfly effect, resulting in drastic changes in their lives. However, they can never be together. Whatever it is that brings them together, manages to build a transparent wall between them. Until they come across each other again in Istanbul, 25 years later…
While the movie, Love “Just a Coincidence,” tells the hurdled story of Özgür and Deniz, who meet in Istanbul in 2010, it also goes back to times that build the present with flashbacks. By taking 70s, 80s, 90s and 2000s Turkey as a background, the movie builds on bygone popular culture elements, music, life styles and habits of those eras. The movie is compiled from many real life stories and promises an unforgettable LOVE story against all odds within a nostalgic journey from Ankara to Istanbul.

Hasan is a twelve-year-old boy who is struggling to survive in a mountain village with his two younger siblings. The family falls into poverty when his father goes to prison. His mother starts to work as a caretaker in town. The film tells the story of a day in the life of Hasan, who tries to sell ayran (yogurt-drink) even though it is the middle of winter, looking for a solution to their situation.
The film not only tells the story of Hasan, a boy who is clinging to life with a great love for his mother within the framework of a small village of poverty and the deadlock of their deprivations and what he goes through trying to make a living selling ayran, but also the people around him as they try to settle their own scores with their lives and themselves. White as Snow shows us how our lives are all connected to one another, how we are responsible for each other, how a seemingly insignificant act in one person’s life can have such a big impact on someone else’s.
